Ethiopia 1

In our efforts to educate and inspire, as well as tether the children of the world together with kites and other toys, we understand that a great number of both children and families face profoundly difficult financial challenges in their everyday lives. Consequently we are now scaling-up our kite and toy manufacturing efforts in the very same impoverished communities, bringing dollars and job training directly into the hands of the people who need it most. To this end, we're partnering with an incredible group of adolescent men and women in Kibera slum, just outside of Nairobi, to produce our next generation of kites. In addition to financing school fees, as well as providing extra income, we're also striving to work with these talented partners to discover what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur in our rapidly changing global economy.

Kenya 2

In the first few months of operation, our partners in Kibera achieved some notable accomplishments. These include having the first kite they made (and sold) flown on the summit of Mount Everest, as well as receiving multiple orders for more kites that necessitated moving to as dedicated facility, where the group will be based for the foreseeable future. In this new facility, we are excited to continue working with our partners in Kibera, as we continue to utilize a greater percentage of locally-available recycled materials, as well as expand into producing other educational toys. For example, 4,000 tons of low-density plastic grocery bags are thrown away in Kenya each month -- often in the neighborhoods where we work. In collaboration with the University of Minnesota, we're exploring the best way we can recycle this resource into our product stream, creating toys that are both clean and safe, in addition to fun. Hopefully this will help us continue to bring even more education and inspiration, as well as income, into the communities that need it most.
